The Big East released its full conference schedule Tuesday afternoon, and once again the season will open with a quintuple-header — a word that never really seemed necessary before the Big East and Fox Sports 1 teamed up for the first time last season — set for New Year’s Eve.

That’s just one of the highlights of the league’s 2014-15 season:

Marquette at Ohio State (Nov. 18, 6:30 p.m., ESPN2)

This will not serve as the head coaching debut of Duke legend Steve Wojciechowski, but who’s really all that jazzed about seeing him against UT Martin? The chance to battle with the reloading Buckeyes and coach Thad Matta will be far more compelling.

Seton Hall vs. Nevada (Nov. 21, 4 p.m., CBS Sports Network)

The Pirates put an uncommon effort into getting New York high school star Isaiah Whitehead onto their roster. As they place him onto the floor in a Seton Hall uniform, who doesn’t want to get a look at that?

Providence vs. Notre Dame (Nov. 23, 2:30 p.m., ESPN2)

Losing a player as essential as Bryce Cotton makes optimism a challenge, but the Friars did not lose gifted coach Ed Cooley, and Cotton was not the only one on last year’s team who could play. This is the kind of victory that could help Providence establish its new identity.

Villanova vs. Illinois (Dec. 9, 7 p.m., ESPN)

This will be a terrific test for a Villanova team that should rank with the nation’s best. Illinois is a classic sleeper: lots of returning regulars from a team that closed with a flourish. This may be the undercard in the Jimmy V Classic, but don’t be surprised if it steals the show from Louisville-Indiana.

Kansas at Georgetown (Dec. 10, 7 p.m., Fox Sports 1)

Although the Hoyas missed the NCAAs last season, they are SN’s No. 2 team in the Big East. How will they make it back to the show? By winning games such as this one, against the perennial Big 12 champions.

Georgetown at Xavier (Dec. 31, 10 p.m., Fox Sports 1)

The full, five-game New Year’s Eve extravaganza starts at noon with the NYC metro rivalry game between Seton Hall and St. John’s, but the prize of the day is for those who have considerable stamina and don’t care if they must skip New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. For that matter, they might miss the actual passing of 2014 into 2015, but it’s important to have priorities.

Villanova at Georgetown (Jan. 19, 9 p.m., Fox Sports 1)

These two teams are the league’s most established brands and the teams SN picks to finish 1-2 in the Big East. Given how strongly the Wildcats performed last season and how much of their power returns, it might be tough for anyone in the league to compete with them for the title if the Hoyas don’t hold their homecourt here.

Villanova at Butler (Feb. 14, 6 p.m., CBS Sports Network)

When these two played last year, with Butler on the way to an injury-damaged 4-14 Big East debut and Villanova on the way to winning the league by two games, Nova had to rally to force overtime and squeeze out a 3-point win. And that was with star Bulldogs forward Roosevelt Jones missing. He’s back now.

Georgetown at St. John’s (Feb. 28, noon, CBS)

Why do we get the feeling that St. John’s, as February closes, will be a bubble team scrambling for quality wins as the Hoyas visit the Big Apple? The Red Storm have been that sort of team so many times in recent years. Why not another?

St. John’s at Villanova (March 7, noon, Fox Sports or Fox Sports 1)

The Big East will play the final five games of its regular season between noon and 4 p.m. on the first Saturday in March. It’s likely one — or more — will involve title implications. It seems highly likely this will be one of those crucial games.
