Here are five interesting facts about the 24-year-old.

Gylfi the sea giant

The name Gylfi literally translates to ‘sea giant’ or ‘sea king’ in Icelandic. It is no surprise then that the 24-year-old holds a stake in a fishing company called ‘Lotna ehf’ back home. Will he live up to his name in the near future? One can only wait and watch.

An experienced campaigner of English football

Despite his relatively young age, Sigurdsson has played in four different divisions of English football. He played in League Two for Shrewsbury Town, League One for Crewe Alexandra – both loan spells. He has also played in the Championship for Reading before coming to the EPL on a loan spell for Swansea before he finally made a permanent move to Tottenham.

He has scored at least one goal for each of the above clubs.

Long range specialist

Sigurdsson is known for his long range prowess and has scored quite a few spectacular goals in his career for the various teams he has played for.

One of his more famous goals has come against Schalke when he was playing for German club 1899 Hoffenheim. He scored a 20-yard free kick to equalise the game for his team. He also scored two spectacular goals for the Iceland U21s team versus Scotland U21s to ensure his team’s qualification to the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship

Almost a Gunner

Before he joined Reading, Sigurdsson was on trial at Arsenal – his current club’s arch-rivals. Who knows, Sigurdsson could have been playing for the Red half of North London had the trial worked out.

Incidentally, it was his assist to Gareth Bale that ensured Spurs 2-1 victory over the Gunners last season.

Quite a few feathers in his cap

Despite having a relatively short career, Sigurdsson has quite a few awards beside his name.

In his short spell at 1899 Hoffenheim, he won the ‘Hoffenheim Player Of The Season’ award even though he played less than half the season for the club.

In March 2012, during his stint at Swansea, he became the first-ever Icelandic player to win the Premier League Player Of The Month award.
