While it seems that the core video game series is completed, we know that a spin-off entitled FNAF World is in active development, shifting the series’ traditional jump-scare gameplay towards something closer to an RPG. However, now Cawthon has announced a novelization which might uncover more details of Five Nights at Freddy’s central plot.

As has become typical for the franchise, the book was announced via coded messages on its official website. Last week, a teaser image for FNAF World unexpectedly changed to a picture of Freddy Fazbear adorned with the text ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s The Untold Story’ and ‘Coming Soon.’

One of the things fans love about Five Nights at Freddy’s is its confusing, cyclic storyline. Players have been given several glimpses into the history of the titular pizza restaurant, but the complete story has never quite been outlined — even after the release of four instalments.

Fans are keen to know all the grisly details of the descent of Freddy’s from family restaurant to nightmare pizzeria. We already know that FNAF World won’t tackle the same plot points as the mainline series, so the novelization may well turn out to be Cawthon’s best opportunity to fill in some blanks for his audience.

It will certainly be interesting to see whether the book has any bearing of the film adaptation that’s currently in pre-production. That being said, it seems that Hollywood will have its own ideas for the franchise, so the book may well be Cawthon’s way of rounding out the story he created on his own terms.

Whatever the specifics of the novelization, fans of the series will no doubt have their interest piqued by the prospect of an ‘untold’ chapter. Even better, this franchise has come to be characterized by surprise releases — rather than waiting for a release date announcement, we can expect the book itself to go be made available with little warning.

The Five Nights at Freddy’s series is available now on PC.
