So much buzz, in fact, that the Five Nights at Freddy’s concept has been optioned for a movie. That’s right, Warner Bros. studios is looking to make a feature length movie out of Scott Cawthorn’s Chuck E. Cheese from hell video game.

At the moment, there isn’t much to learn about the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, only that Warner Bros. has acquired the rights. They’ve also put horror writer Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) on-board as a producer. Based purely on Grahame-Smith’s involvement it sounds like the movie might go for a creepy, atmospheric vibe than a straight horror one.

For those who might not be familiar with Five Nights at Freddy’s, the concept is pretty simple. An unnamed player character is hired as an overnight security guard for a kids themed restaurant named Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. The goal is simply to watch over the property, but the player soon finds that the animatronic animals that serve as Freddy Fazbear’s main attraction actually come to life. So, an easy security job eventually becomes a survive-the-night type experience, with players monitoring a number of cameras to ensure no animatronics get close enough to kill them.

For some, that unique concept has been enough to support interest in additional Five Nights at Freddy’s games. Developer Scott Cawthorn has been wise to take advantage of his flash in the pan as well, delivering three titles in the span of six months. Each game has added new mechanics, but the basic survive the night idea has stayed the same.

How well that simplicity might translate to a movie is unclear. Obviously, the idea of animatronic animals coming to life and trying to kill unsuspecting security guards is a great starting point, but where does the film go from there? The game is predicated purely on staring at security camera screens and is overwrought with jump scares, which is fine for a video game but will hardly sustain a full-length movie.

Then again, who is to say whether this Five Night at Freddy’s film will ever get off the ground. For now Warner Bros. is scooping up a video game property while it is hot, but there’s no telling whether it will still be that way in a year.
