5 Shows to Watch if You Love All American
1. Last Chance U
If you love the football side of All American, you will not want to miss Last Chance U on Netflix.
The first season of the Netflix documentary series explores the football program at East Mississippi Community College alongside the personal struggles of the collegiate athletes.
In particular, it focused on the EMCC Lions during their 2015 season as they competed for the fourth JUCO national title.
The second season of Last Chance U followed the EMCC Lions once again as they competed in the national championships.
Seasons 3 and 4 of Last Chance U moved to the Independence Community College of Kansas and followed football once again with season five following the team at Laney College in Oakland California.
There has even been a Basketball spin-off, titled Last Chance U: Basketball, which explored the hoops program at East Los Angeles College, training under head coach John Mosley.
The first five seasons of Last Chance U and Last Chance U: Basketball are streaming on Netflix now.
2. Friday Night Lights
Friday Night Lights is an American sports drama television series, based on a book of the same name by H.G. Bissinger.
The series follows a high school football team in the fictional town of Dillion, in rural Texas, led by coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler).
Just like All American, the series addresses social and cultural issues including family values, racism, drug abuse, and social inequality.
Sadly, the series ended in 2011, but thankfully it is available to stream on Hulu now.
3. Euphoria
Euphoria is the award-winning American teen drama created by Sam Levinson for HBO and loosely based on an Israeli show.
It stars Zendaya as Rue Bennett, a recovering teenage drug addict who is trying to find her place in the world. For her performance in Euphoria, Zendaya won herself the Emmy for best actress.
As well as focusing on drugs and addiction, the show follows Rue and her friends through their experiences of sex, friendships, love, and trauma—just like All American.
In particular, if you were drawn into Olivia’s (Samantha Logan) addiction storyline in All American, you should check out Euphoria on HBO Max.
If you like season one of Euphoria, there is some good news. Season 2 is on its way to HBO soon.
4. On My Block
On My Block and All American are similar in that they follow universal teen stories, not to mention both shows are set in Los Angeles.
On My Block is set in the fictional town of Freeridge, a low-income inner-city LA neighborhood.
Just like All American, On My Block features a diverse cast as well as up-and-coming talent.
There are four seasons in total, which are available to stream and download on Netflix now.
5. Spinning Out
Spinning Out is an American drama series starring Kaya Scodelario as Kat Baker, a young ice skater who suffers a serious injury and is trying to get her sporting career back on track.
However, at the same time, Kat is trying to hide her own mental health struggles as well as her family’s history of mental illness.
Just like All American, Spinning Out touches on mental health and the pressures associated with competitive sports alongside romance, friendship, and the importance of teamwork.
Sadly, Spinning Out was canceled after just one season. The 10-part series is streaming on Netflix now.
