Some of the biggest names in entertainment were in attendance, including Selena Gomez, Ryan Reynolds, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Lizzo, Billy Porter, Carrie Underwood, Khloe Kardashian and more.

On the night, Taylor Swift, BTS, Lizzo, Gomez, and actress Elizabeth Olsen were the big winners of the evening as well as Netflix’s Stranger Things, which won TV Show of 2022 and Sci/Fantasy Show of 2022.

Shania Twain was honored with the Music Icon Award and also performed a melody of her greatest hits, as well as her new single “Waking Up Dreaming,” much to the delight of the audience.

It was also a great night for Reynolds, who received the People’s Icon Award.

Newsweek has taken a look at the five standout moments from the PCA’s 2022 and the full list of winners below.

Five Standout Moments at People’s Choice Awards 2022 From Snubs to Surprises

  1. Selena Gomez’s Win

Selena Gomez finally got the recognition she deserved at the PCAs for her work on Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building after she was snubbed at the 2022 Emmys.

Gomez won the PCA for Comedy TV Star of 2022 for her performance as true-crime enthusiast Mabel in Only Murders, sharing the screen with Martin Short and Steve Martin.

However, that was not Gomez’s only award of the night. She also took home the PCA for Social Celebrity of 2022.

  1. Lizzo’s Epic Win and Speech

Lizzo won not one, but two awards at the PCA’s 2022. Her single “About Damn Time” was named the song of 2022, and she also received the People’s Champion Award.

Her mom, Shari Johnson-Jefferson, was on hand to present Lizzo with her People’s Champion Award, telling the crowd her daughter “has shown us all that we don’t have to conform to anyone’s standards in order to be happy, to be creative and to feel worthy. I know that Lizzo has literally saved lives. No one is more deserving of this honor. I am so proud of her.”

However, instead of recognizing her own achievements, Lizzo took the time to highlight several activists whom she brought on stage with her, including Mari Copeny, Shirley Raines, Yasmine Aker, Emiliana Guereca, Esther Lim, Felicia “Fe” Montes, Jayla Sullivan, Kara Roselle Smith, Maggie Mireles, Amelia Bonow, Odilia Romero, Tarlan Rabizadeh, Sahar Pirzada, Chandi Moore, Crystal Echo Hawk, Reshma Saujani and Tamika Palmer.

As Lizzo spoke, the images of other activists from across the globe appeared on the screen behind her.

Lizzo said: “To be an icon isn’t about how long you’ve had your platform. Being an icon is what you do with that platform. Ever since the beginning of my career, I’ve used my platform to amplify marginalized voices. Tonight, I’m sharing this honor.”

  1. Shania Twain’s Shoutout to Ryan Reynolds

Shania Twain took to the stage after accepting her award for Music Icon to perform a melody of her greatest hits.

Of course, Twain performed one of her most iconic and much-loved songs, 1997’s “That Don’t Impress Me Much.”

Famously, the song contains the lyric “OK, so you’re Brad Pitt? That don’t impress me much.”

However, for her PCA performance, she swapped mention of Pitt for Ryan Reynolds, and the actor’s reaction in the audience was priceless.

  1. Ellen Pompeo’s Won… Again

Once again, Ellen Pompeo was named Female TV Star of 2022, her fourth time accepting the award.

Considering how long Grey’s Anatomy has been on (17 years), Pompeo winning more than once is pretty inevitable.

However, sadly this meant Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown, The Woman in the House star Kristen Bell, Never Have I Ever’s Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Mandy Moore from This Is Us, Law & Order’s Mariska Hargitay, Abbott Elementary’s Quinta Brunson and Selena Gomez for Only Murders missed out on taking home a well-deserved PCA Award.

Maybe it will be their time in 2023 as Pompeo has officially stepped back from her role as Meredith Grey going forward.

Nevertheless, it was a great night to be a Grey’s Anatomy cast member and fan as the show also won its fifth PCA for Best Drama Show.

  1. ‘Don’t Worry Darling’’s Win

It may or may not come as a surprise that Don’t Worry Darling — arguably the most talked-about film of 2022 — was named Drama Movie of the Year by the American public.

On the run-up to the movie’s release, Don’t Worry Darling was plagued with drama from affair rumors to alleged fallouts, Spitgate, and more.

In the end, Don’t Worry Darling beat the likes of Nope, Death on the Nile, Elvis, Halloween Ends, Luckiest Girl Alive, Scream, and Where the Crawdads Sing.

Accepting the award, star and director Olivia Wilde said: “Thank you so much. Obviously, this isn’t for me, but it’s for the entire production. It is such an honor to accept it on behalf of our entire Don’t Worry Darling family.

“We made this movie in 2020 when many people were not confident that audiences would ever return to theaters if they ever reopened, yet… crew members showed up every single day during a pandemic to make something that they hoped that you got.”
